Drill Bit Chooser
Plastic drilling

Which drill bit is right for plastic?

Acrylic is not polycarbonate or PVC. Product thickness and stress also affect drilling conditions.

Quick answer

“Plastic” describes multiple very different materials. For acrylic (PMMA), use a plastic-ground bit specified for acrylic sheet, with geometry designed to reduce grabbing or chipping. We do not generalize that advice to every polycarbonate or PVC product.

What changes the bit choice?

Start with the plastic name

Acrylic is not polycarbonate or PVC. Product thickness and stress also affect drilling conditions.

Acrylic uses modified cutting geometry

ACRYLITE provides acrylic-specific drilling guidance, including point/rake geometry that differs from aggressive general metal drills.

Support the exit face

Secure the workpiece, support sheet where recommended and follow tooling guidance. Ask for the actual material datasheet if uncertainty remains.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using one bit recommendation for all plastics.
  • Allowing aggressive cutting geometry to grab acrylic.
  • Drilling an unsupported fragile sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an ordinary HSS twist drill on acrylic?

Standard drills may need appropriate modification; the manufacturer’s acrylic drilling guidance should control the selection.
